Physical and Spiritual Detoxification – Session One

For Optimum Health:

You need a total cleansing of your body, mind and soul which is an integrated part of living a healthy lifestyle and spiritual focus purpose. That means routinely purging trash and toxins from your inner and outer environments. When junk is kept to a minimum, your entire being is free to function better. You will have more vitality for pursuing what is important to you. Because while physically you seem to be able to easily recognize the need for detoxification, your need for physical detoxification risks in comparison with your often-unrecognized need for spiritual detoxification. “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken” Psalm 16:8 (NIV). As the science of the body continues to grow, you have become more attuned to how impurities effect your health, and you have discovered ways to rid your body of these impurities in order to promote physical health. This is called “detoxification.” It’s essential to “detox”, “cleanse” and “flush” away all of your toxins. “Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind” Psalm 26:2 (NIV). Detoxing will deliver a renewed body and better health. Not only will you look better, you’ll feel better, since it is a new year, then a purification from last year’s habits (dietary and otherwise) of last year be the best way to start. In many ways, the same holds true not just your body but your soul. The impurities of your sins known as “toxins”, in which can cause a lack of spiritual health. Now, a detoxification is a necessary process to promote full body health; this is especially true if you are not the healthiest eater. The detoxification process removes harmful or toxic substances from your body, leading to better health and a great starting place for a new healthy lifestyle. If you experience any of the following, it is the likely time for a physical detox. Spiritually speaking, a detoxification (or purification) of your soul is a necessary process to promote a healthy and fully alive relationship with God. If you experience any of the following, it is the likely time for a spiritual detox. The science of the body with the “science of the soul.” In other words, another way to understand spiritual health is to look at how it closely corresponds with physical health. Here, I give a brief summary of the “signs one needs a physical detox” and link them to the “signs one needs a spiritual detox.” “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” Psalm 86:11 (NIV). Ask that the Lord teach us to live and act in accordance to his truth, pursuing his will. We need him to join all the purposes, resolutions, and affections of our hearts into a singular purpose to worship, obey, and honor him. Every day, every hour. If our hearts are divided, all will be wrong.

Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. So, if you want different results, start making different choices. Spring is a time of renewal. It is during this time that many people take advantage of the warming temperatures and breath–taking season to renew their dedication to Lord’s will for their personal, professional and spiritual journey. Physical and spiritual detoxification allows us to refresh our ambitions, reestablish our goals and renew our purposes. Part of this renewal process often involves ridding old behaviors and habits along with unhealthy friendships and toxic relationships. While we are doing all of these detoxification processes and renewing our commitment to living better, it is a good idea to look at our lives as a whole to see if there might be some other areas that needs to have a self–examination before moving forward in our purpose. May we act and regard ourselves as always in the Lord’s presence, for what is continually before our eyes is what shapes us. If our gaze is locked upon the Lord in the struggle, pain, and change, we will be anchored and not disturbed by fear. “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” Psalm 16:11 (NIV). In the words of Augustine, “Lord, show me the road I must travel that I may see you.” God’s path alone leads to life, and his hand provides not just pleasure, but eternal pleasure. And not merely joy, but full joy. This is the time to release past grudges, feelings of guilty and holding on to bitterness is not usually the healthiest way to live a happy, successful and whole life. Take this time to make amends for past wrongs, forgive what can be forgiven and let people know how you feel about those things that have been bothering you for years. Now is the perfect time to detoxify your circle of friends or inner circle of influence. This may be the most difficult thing to detox, but if you have toxic people in your life it is time to let them go; so that you can walk in the spirit holiness. If you cannot remove them from your life completely, you should be able to at least limit your contact with them as much as possible. Do not let others steal your happiness or draw you into their drama. If you limit the amount of time you spend with toxic people, you are sure to enjoy a happier, healthier life. “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:5 (NIV).

Detox Your Words:

We cannot effectively fight any spiritual battles in the world while neglecting the ones in our hearts and minds. The Psalmists David knew the power of words. They used them to create beautiful poems of praise, to pierce the soul, and paint glorious pictures of God’s character. Words have the power to build or break, to decimate or create and choose them with wisdom. They flow out of our hearts, so if they are a continual struggle, we should take the time to examine our core. “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” Psalm 19:14 (NIV). Let us be a generation faithful in speaking the truths we’ve been entrusted with, handing them off to the future generations.“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” Psalms 78:4 (NIV). God is our good and His mercy endures forever, while He continues to keep us covered under His arch of safety. And we can’t add to His goodness in any way, because He is always making away of escape for us and always providing for our very needs. Through the gospel, the entirety of our sin and death can be exchanged for the entirety of His goodness and life, and our redeemed souls can rest in Him for eternity. He is our portion, our hope, and our stay. Not hiding these truths in fear or corrupting them to fulfill our own agendas, but speaking them for Lord's glory, purposes, and praise. We should keep the wholesome words, thoughts and deed doing this fast. “I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing” Psalms 16:2 (NIV). We must learn how to restrain our tongues releasing any depraved arguments, ungodly communication or vile words from our lips especially during this fast, because this is the time for us to seek the Lord for consecrated our communication and speech.
