Day 5: Changes Begins In the Mind - Part 1

The central nervous system is an intricate network of communication that transmits, receives, and interprets billions of chemical and electrical signals, which are continuously flowing between the mind and the physical world around us. Thinking is a function of interpreting these signals, giving them meaning, and ultimately choosing to act upon them. For this reason, it is absolutely essential that the “data” we are receiving is accurate, appropriate, and interpreted correctly. When we have bad data, we will make inaccurate interpretations, and ultimately, wrong decisions. Therefore, we must make sure we are receiving the right data, avoiding the wrong data, and developing the skills of processing and interpreting that will lead to decisions that are good, God-pleasing, and conducive to living a transformed life. The transformation starts in the mind, in Christ our thoughts become brand new. In Christ we are not trying to defend self, we are surrendering to him and going through a complete metamorphosis apart from other people’s opinions. When our thinking is changed, our beliefs are changed, our actions are changed, and our life is changed. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12:1–2 (NKJV). The word Paul uses here is the word we use for the metamorphosis of a butterfly. The change in the end is something completely different than was there before. This is how total the transformation should be when it comes to our thinking. And remember, our thoughts determine our actions. Christians often talk about having a Biblical worldview, yet most have only a rudimentary knowledge of the Bible. They attempt to build a framework without first gathering the lumber and cement needed to create a solid foundation.

The benefits of following this process should therefore be obvious. By fully immersing yourself into the text you’ll come to truly know the text. You’ll deepen your understanding of each book and knowledge of the Bible as a whole. The human mind is a wonderful and fascinating gift from God. While the brain is the physical organ that houses and enables the mind to operate in the body, it is through a network called the central nervous system that the mind is able to make sense of the world. God cares about your mind. He is very clear that our thoughts are both visible and important to Him. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer” Psalm 19:14 (NKJV). That means that God sees what we think in our hearts and minds. Our thought life can either be acceptable or unacceptable to God. Our minds are like a wide–screen TV hidden within our inner man that houses our internal thoughts. You cannot choose what the broadcasters will play on a given channel at a given time, but you can choose what channels you are going to play out in your daily lives. This is why we must take ownership of our minds, by learning how to win over the battlefield that is taking place within our minds daily. God has given us the authority and power to control our own life remote control. Because whatever you allow to fill your mind will eventually show up in your life. “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV). Show me your mind, and I’ll show you your future. You cannot fill your mind with worldly thinking, ungodly entertainment, unclean language and images, negative news reports, and fear-filled imaginations, then expect your life to be filled with the blessings and promises of God. “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV). Not only does God see our thoughts, He will hold us accountable for them. Whatever we allow to captivate our thought life will eventually control our lives. The life you are experiencing today is largely a result of your thought life yesterday. Whatever we continually meditate upon will begin to program our reason, feelings, and will. Over time, we will subconsciously make choices to speak and act in ways that are consistent with the prevailing thoughts in our minds.
