A Servant's Heart Is God's Secret to Greatness - Part Three

Updated: Sep 28, 2021

Serving others is more than keeping up with your to-do list. To be a servant means we genuinely need to care about people. It’s keeping our eyes, hearts, and schedules open for divine appointments. Jesus was not stressed by time, what others thought of Him, or a list of tasks to accomplish each day. Jesus was led by the Spirit of God and followed His promptings to serve, love, and help others. No task was ever beneath Jesus, and no person was ever unworthy. "For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself" Galatians 5:13-14 (NKJV).

The goal of the servant is to serve, and that's it. One serves as an expression of worship to the Lord. He serves to express the love of God in a practical way, and in so doing, he honors the Lord. Servanthood is other-centered, not self-centered. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, amor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you" Ephesians 4:31-32 (NKJV).

Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave-just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

Five Characteristic Of A True Servant:

1. Servants must be prepared to humble themselves; God has always been more interested in what is on the inside than what is on the outside of a person. "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord" 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NKJV).

2. Servants must be zealous, which is having a purpose on fire that takes on a purpose. Because serving others and worshipping the Father become the burning mission in this life for the Kingdom. "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord" Romans 12:10-11 (NKJV).

3. Servants never try to out do or outshine those whom they are serving, they serve with a compassionate and loving heart and zealous spirit. They serve with the same attitude as Jesus understanding that Christ chose to make Himself a bondservant to save others. "Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive" Acts 20:34 -35 (NKJV).

4. Servants has a caring heart and compassionate spirit. A true servant acknowledges that they must move in the servant love of Jesus even when we don't know whey and have no way of counting the cost. "If anyone serves Me, let himfollow Me; andwhere I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor" John 12:26 (NKJV).

5. Servants display acts of kindness with a forgiving heart. They understand that any follower of Christ with a true servant heart is quick to forgive and forget the wounds and wrongs inflicted by others. God's servants always choose to bless whether that involves doing acts of kindness, bringing joy to others or actively loving the unlovable through tangible acts of service. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV).

All of this is virtually impossible to teach, it must be caught, by drawing near to the divine Servant who have His all for the disciples (servants). We must allow His fire to ignite the flame of humble servanthood in your heart.
