There is POWER in the NAME of JESUS. The name of Jesus and the word “name” really means by Biblical definition in the Greek noun for “name” is “onoma” and it has several different meanings according to its use in the verse and content of the passage of Scripture. The Bible says “In My name” Jesus was referring to what would happen when the disciples or followers of Christ Jesus would represent Him to those who were needing salvation in their lives. “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues” Mark 16:17 (NKJV).
The phrase “in My name” in this verse of scripture falls under the definition of “in the power of” meaning that when a believer in Christ Jesus speaks or acts in the power of the name of Jesus the results that He spoke of would happen: demons would be cast out, they would speak with new tongues, they would take up serpents and not be hurt, they would encounter deadly poisons and even though they drank them they would not be hurt and they would lay hands on the sick and they would recover. When we represent Jesus, we are His ambassadors and speak for Him through the authority that He has placed within us. We are not operating in the power of our own name, but of His. We are doing His work, not ours, and thus He has equipped us as His representatives to continue the work that He did on the earth. “And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household” Acts 16:30–31 (NKJV).
When we believe that Jesus is who He says He is, we believe that He is the true Son of God and Savior of the world. This belief leads us to repent and turn from our sin, confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord, to receive salvation so that we might live and walk in the righteousness of Christ. “And he said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence” 2 Samuel 22:2–3 (NKJV).
God’s saving grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of Him as our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. The people whom God has saved, and whom God has called, and who also were given grace in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time. As a seal, we are gifted and filled with the Holy Spirit. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” Acts 1:8 (NKJV).
When we receive Christ as Savior, He gives us this intercessor, living in us and working through us. It’s not enough just to try and be like Jesus – power does not come from imitation. With the help of the Spirit, we not only have the power but we also know when to use it and how.
Jesus gave the disciples power to perform miracles while also coaching them for the trials that would beset them; perhaps these trials stick in the minds of believers. He said “when you are arrested” not “if you are arrested.” Jesus advised the 12 how to react when they were rejected in a town: “shake the dust off your feet” as “testimony against them.” A miracle: eternal salvation for each new believer. If that is not enough, Jesus walks with the believer daily, and every time a believer calls on His name, the clamorous call of sin in a person’s life is drowned by the echo of God’s promises claimed in Christ’s name.
Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is the main topic in the New Testament of the Bible. The gospel is the good news of our reconciliation from the death of sin to eternal life in Christ. “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” Romans 10:12–13 (NKJV).
The same power that accompanied Jesus Christ through His perfect life, in order that He may die a perfect death and then three days later defeat the grave, now lives in those who call on His name. For Christians, we receive a divine power through salvation in Christ and the receiving of the Holy Spirit. This power transforms our hearts and desires. This power enables us to proclaim boldly the good news of the gospel, to approach the throne of grace in times of need, to speak truth over the lies we are tempted to believe, to cling to hope and joy in the midst of trial and difficulty, and to preserve as faithful saints in the long journey of life.
We were washed clean by the blood of the lamb, whatever was done to us, no matter what we did in the past, and our name is “beloved” regardless of the names we have been called by anyone else. We have died to our past life and will die an earthly death, but Jesus raised us from death in sin to eternal life with the Father. In His name, those who choose salvation will be donned in robes of white. “After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands” Revelations 7:9 (NKJV). A seat in heaven is reserved and paid for, and that is no parlor trick: that is the awesome power of Jesus.
When we come to the place that we realize that we need a Savior to pay the price for our sin, we can turn to Jesus knowing that if we confess Him as our Savior and Lord we will be saved. Salvation is more than just forgiveness of sin, but also includes healing, deliverance, reconciliation between family members, financial prosperity, simply anything that you have need of, we can be assured that when we confess Jesus as the answer to our need, we can know that He is the One to provide for that need in our lives. There is forgiveness of sins in the Name of Jesus; there is Healing in the Name of Jesus; there is prosperity or wholeness in the Name of Jesus.
There is reconciliation in the Name of Jesus, because His authority covers every need that man has or will every have. “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves” Romans 13:1–2 (NKJV).
There is salvation in the name of Jesus; there is healing in the name of Jesus; there is deliverance in the name of Jesus; there is hope in the name of Jesus; there is power in the name of Jesus! Everything that man has need of is found in the authority, character, rank, majesty, power, and excellence of the NAME of JESUS!
God’s Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV).
