Women of Excellence Rising Above the Norm Mother's Day Celebration Week - Day 2:

Historically, we celebrate the accomplishments and good virtues of mothers on Mother’s Day. The card, flower, and chocolate industry have capitalized on this celebration. But the Bible also spoke about the strengths of a Christian mother long before Mother’s Day became a date on our calendars.

As sin entered the world, there are also pictures of mothers in the Bible who did not do what was right. They injured their children, neglected them, abandoned them, and abused them. This is not the ideal that God designed. His design was perfect. Mothers would be an example of His unconditional love. God’s love is likened to a mother’s love in Isaiah. In trying to explain God’s love for the His people, the prophet Isaiah used the best metaphor he could think of. That of a mother’s love for her child.

"Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you" Isaiah 49:15

"As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem." Isaiah 66:13

A mother’s influence on her child’s life lasts a lifetime. When God created mothers, His plan was perfect. Mothers would have a heart filled with love for their children, they would be generous, they would teach their children in the ways of God, and they would love them unconditionally.

Being a mother means being relied upon to know how to do things you may not know how to do, how to make things you may never have heard of, how to fix things without the right tools, and how to soothe the darkest fears imaginable within your child without any light to guide you at all. Being a mother is a journey that can take you up to the peaks of joy, through the valleys of contentment, and right down into the trenches of your own emotional limits. Being a mother means you will be cracked open by panic, worry, and stress. It also means you will be stitched up again by sweet smiles, soft little hands, and the warmest of hugs. To choose to be a mother means you have decided that you are ready for this journey even when you don’t know where you are going or how you’ll even get there. It means the person you once thought you were will likely take a back seat to the new warrior created by motherhood. You will get dirty, bruised, knocked over, tested, and most of all—you will realize that the love for a child can expand over any kind of obstacle.

“There is no greater good in all the world than motherhood. The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.” ~ James E. Faust “A miracle is really the only way to describe motherhood and giving birth. It’s unbelievable how God has made us women and babies to endure and be able to do so much. A miracle indeed. Such an incredible blessing.” ~ Jennie Finch

What is the role of a mother in a family? Mothers play a critical role in the family, which is a powerful force for social cohesion and integration. The mother-child relationship is vital for the healthy development of children. And mothers are not only caregivers; they are also breadwinners for their families. The Bible is very clear in that we should honor our Mothers. Motherhood comes crashing in from all sides, and it can feel like no one truly understands what you are going through. Give yourself a gift by letting your people into this new, messy motherhood stage. Say yes to your mom when she offers to stay with you for a day or two. Say yes when your friend suggests bringing over a meal. Point her to the vacuum and the sink full of dishes when she says she’d like to help. Don’t feel bad about this or worry you’re infringing. Motherhood has a tendency of ruining all illusions of control. You may not want to hear this, but don’t rush figuring out a schedule. Take some time. Notice what your child naturally does. This is the time to say yes, even when it feels hard. Doing so will remind you that you have a crew backing you up. A God-fearing mom is intimately connected with God. She maintains a prayer and devotional life to keep a discerning heart. She is intentional about growing her knowledge of the truth by reading her Bible daily and committing Scripture to memory. She prays to seek God’s wisdom and guidance for each day. "She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard" Proverbs 31:14-16 (NKJV).
